OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow, or possibly a very strong
graduate student, to lead empirical and conceptual research on free
will which includes the examination of people’s beliefs in free will
as well as the implications of such beliefs (e.g., for stigmatization,
health-related behaviour, or moral decisions). The fellow will work
at the Neuroethics research unit (www.ircm.qc.ca/neuroethics/en/)
in partnership with the University of Cologne.
Our project aims to contribute, from a pragmatist standpoint, to a
better understanding of beliefs in free will in the context of ethics
theory and practice. This entails bridging different disciplinary
approaches using conceptual, quantitative, and qualitative methods.
Outcomes of this project would include, among others, a review
paper detailing the state of knowledge about belief in free will
and its implications and empirical papers based on experimental
quantitative research. This position is funded by a grant from the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This
is a 12-month position with possible renewal.
