Nick Iles at The Oxford Centre for Neuroethics, sent me this blurb:
For Trinity Term 2009 the Uehiro Lectures will be given by Professor Allen Buchanan, James B. Duke Professor of Philosophy, Duke University . The three lectures will focus on “Beyond Humanity? The Ethics of Biomedical Enhancement.”
The lectures will take place in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre, Department of Physics, 16:30-18:30, on Tuesdays May 5, May 12 and May 19.
More information is here.
I have no idea about the substance of Allen Buchanan's talk but I believe him to be one of our best contemporary philosophers and not only because he deals with ethical and moral questions of obvious practical if not urgent relevance but because he is such a damn good philosopher who also happens to write well. I try to read everything he's published and I've long been impressed by his work. And what little correspondence I've had with him revealed a kind and generous person as well. Readers of this blog probably know him for his work on genetics and ethics but he's plunged into diverse areas of ethics, law and philosophy, and we're all a bit wiser as a result.
